The V70 inherits the chassis and safety systems introduced with the S80—adaptive damping with three positions, selectable steering effort low, medium, and high , radar-based collision warning, and blind-spot warning. It was also designed, first and foremost, as a comfortable, functional family estate. Like the standard halogen headlamps, the Bi-Xenons are automatically adjusted depending on how heavily the car is loaded and also on whether the car is accelerating or braking. It all comes together to make for an inviting place to rack up some miles. New cabin based on luxury S80 The cabin of the V70 is based on the luxury S80, so - as designer Stefan Jansson puts it - 'we got a lot for free. Aluminium rails are fitted to the floor and their adjustable anchorage points make it easy to secure items. Standard features include leather upholstery, a choice of two wood trims including walnut, heated and powered front seats, and luxury floor mats.
Use of this site implies your agreement to these terms. The R-Design variants get a Lowered Sports Chassis lowered 20mm at the front and 15mm at the rear. Another example is the speed-dependent power steering, which can be set at one of three levels via the information system. The new models were assembled in Torsl. On so many levels, the all-new V70 wins as the supreme estate car. That's a pity, because it greatly improves passing power and it simulates the sound, if not quite the thrust of 's twin-turbo six. This is the first V70 to have a six-cylinder engine.
The navigation system is new, and promising. All engines, including two in-line, six-cylinder motors, are transversely mounted for maximum safety in a frontal impact. If the time gap to the car in front gets shorter than the selected speed, the driver gets visual information in the head-up display on the lower section of the windscreen. The V70 has a six-cylinder engine as opposed to five for the first time, with a more efficient six-speed automatic transmission. As before, there's an version that is virtually identical mechanically to the V70, even if it looks more rugged and macho. There are five different time intervals to choose from.
Numerous dynamic sensors monitor the vehicle's behaviour so that, when necessary, the system can reduce engine torque and apply carefully calculated braking power to stop skids. Volvo says the booster seat allows for proper seat belt positioning on children; the weight and height range for the lower position is 50-80 pounds and 45-55 inches tall, while the higher position is designed for passengers who weigh 35-55 pounds and are 37-47 inches tall. Top speed is 121mph, 0-60mph acceleration takes 10. In both cases seatbelt angles are optimised, so safety is improved. The six-speed manual improves both performance and fuel economy, and is a smooth-shifting clutch-and-stick shift aimed at those who prefer changing gear themselves. It generates 235 horsepower at 6200 rpm, with 236 pound-feet of torque at 3200 rpm.
Volvo's popular option packages are also available, including the Communications pack, Active Bi-Xenon pack, Winter pack and Family pack, which includes the new dual stage integrated rear seat child booster cushions. The cargo area is one of the V70's strengths. This device also allows you to tell if the car has been tampered with as you approach it in a dark parking lot, and includes a heartbeat sensor to determine if there is a villain lurking inside. We pioneered this market more than 50 years ago and we are determined to continue to dominate. The V-shaped bonnet, introduced on the first S80 and second series V70, is highly distinctive, as is the soft, rounded nose - which has additional pedestrian safety benefits.
Performance is strong: top speed 146mph and 0-60 acceleration in 7. To complement the interior themes a range of four inlays are available including a new Modern Wood trim with a natural finish. The system issues a warning if the V70 is closing quickly on an object and pre-loads the brake system, and it can actually engage the brakes if the driver fails to respond. Maximum speed is 140mph in manual form and 0-60mph takes only 8. When not in use it retracts, helping to keep the car's interior design less cluttered and more Swedish minimalist.
First released in 1997 and kept in production until 1999, the standard V70R's engine produces 300 horsepower and 400Nm. Both the Driver Alert Control and Lane Departure Warning are activated when the car reaches 40mph and they will stay active as long as the speed exceeds 37mph. It contributes to the understated simplicity of the interior, avoiding a plethora of confusing switchgear. The car's advanced electronics automatically recognise what sort of fuel is being used and adjust the engine's tune accordingly. Naturally we also wanted further to improve the space and versatility and I believe we have now delivered the most functional and practical estate car that Volvo has ever built.
The new V70 also features a few new safety options. The rear seats are not the roomiest, given the apparent size of the vehicle. The brakes equalize torque from side to side. Safety Safety is the key quality of any Volvo. Quality and Equipment Scandinavia is renowned for its great interior design and Volvo is no exception. Yet if Volvo can boast a following, it's with brand loyalists who have held steadfast to its wagons for more than 50 years. Prices start at £28,545 for the 2.
In profile, the character line at the bottom of the windows rises a bit more dramatically, creating a more forward leaning, dynamic stance. Computer control automatically firms up dampers as speeds increase, improving handling and steering response. The sports chassis has been optimised with the help of features such as stiffer anti-roll bars and bushings and lower ground clearance for more direct road contact and more responsive and rewarding steering feedback. Unlike conventional 60:40 or 50:50 split rear seats, the new set-up means that long items such as skis can be accommodated while two adults sit in comfort in the rear. Independent studies invariably conclude that Volvos are among the longest-lasting and most durable of all cars.
